Sweet and Sour Tofu Recipe

 Serves 4

This is such a yummy dish and it is even BETTER the next day! Jerome absolutely loves it. It seriously feels like a healthier vegan version of a restaurant sweet and sour dish.  I have made it heaps of times now and will continue to do so because it never fails! This is definitely a dish that I make for non-vegans to show them how filling and delicious vegan food can be! Muahahaha. My mum who is also vegan, makes this dish frequently now too. I guarantee that you too, will make this a staple meal in your household ^-^

For the Sauce:
    1/2 cup tomato sauce
    4 teaspoons soy sauce
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    3 tablespoon sugar
    2 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce*
    1 1/2 teaspoons sesame oil
    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1/2 cup veggie stock

For the Rest:
    2 cups rice
350g extra firm tofu, diced in bite-sized pieces
    1/4 cup olive oil
    2 - 3 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
    1 clove minced fresh garlic
    1 small onion - diced
1 red capsicum, chopped into bite-size pieces
    2 carrots thinly sliced
2 cups snowpeas, chopped into bite-size pieces
    1 1/2 cups raw cashews
    Sesame seeds to garnish (optional)

  1. Boil water in a pot and cook rice according to packet instructions.
  2. Whisk all sauce ingredients and set aside.
  3. In a hot pan/wok, add oil, tofu, ginger, garlic and onion. Use tongs and flip and fry for a few minutes until all sides are golden brown.
  4. Once tofu is cooked, add capsicum and carrots. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until capsicum softens.
  5. Add snowpeas and sauce. Cook for another couple of minutes.
  6. Add cashews
  7. Serve immediately over the rice
  8. Sprinkle with sesame seeds (Looks so delicious and cute)
Adapted from Spark Recipes (Not a vegan version)

*I bought vegan Worcestershire sauce from the health food shop ^^

  11. You're absolutely right, this recipe is super addicting. I've made it several times now, and I'm often running across the street to the grocery store to pick up some tofu for when I start craving this dish. Thanks for the post!

  12. I just made the sauce. I planned to serve it with tofu and peppers later but I'm not sure it will make it to the table. It's not sitting well on my taste buds. I've made quite a few sweet and sour sauces over the years. I chose this one because I thought the worcestershire sauce might give it a 'smoky' kind of appeal. It made it taste odd in my opinion. The large quantity of worcestershire sauce and absence of vinegar makes this more more like BBQ sauce than sweet and sour. It's probably my fault because I used regular worcestershire sauce. (I have no idea what vegan worcestershire sauce tastes like.) But, I like your site and am jazzed to try one of your recipes. I look forward to trying others. Thanks for sharing this recipe. :)

    2. Thanks so much. My better half was napping when I made the sauce and wrote my feedback. He woke up, tried the sauce and said, "this is great!". Shows what I know lol. I added a pinch of sugar and a teaspoon of rice vinegar. I must admit that it tasted really good in the final dish. I judged the sauce too quickly sorry! We aren't vegetarians but we eat a primarily meatless diet. I'm happy to have found your blog and will make good use of it!

  13. I made this tonight and it was awesome! My boyfriend and I thought it was the most tasty thing ever and we are definitely going to make it more often. He has all of the leftovers to work. I was a bit jealous as I was hoping that I could have eaten it today but thats ok. Thanks for providing us with another amazing tofu recipe. It tasted so beautiful and I agree with above in saying that it is really an addictive dish. I am trying your pesto linguine next! Thanks so much again - 10/10

Tried it today and my gosh it tasted amazing. My girlfriend is a vegetarian we usually make something like General Tso's Tofu, but this was as good, if not better.
